14 Romantic Movie Scenes: Part 1

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the day of hearts than a cheesy romantic movie marathon? Here are fourteen iconic scenes from cult classics and new era rom coms that are sure to fill your heart with just the right amount of romance.

Part 1: From the 20th Century

~Spoiler alert for all of the movies listed below~

1. Casablanca

If there’s one old Hollywood, noir film that you should watch in your lifetime, it’s arguably Casablanca. Set against the backdrop of the second world war, espionage, and betrayal, a bar owner is confronted by his former lover seeking a way to smuggle herself and her war hero husband out of the country into safety. We’ll never forget the way Humphrey Bogart looks into Ingrid Bergman’s eyes when he tells her, “We’ll always have Paris.” right before she leaves him with a broken heart for a second time on that airplane tarmac.

2. Titanic

Titanic was a cultural juggernaut that set the theme song of an entire generation’s childhood to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. This movie is a classic rich girl meets poor boy story on a ship bound for the history books. We’d all be lying if we said we never tried recreating that iconic scene at the front of the ship where Rose says “I’m flying!”

3. 10 Things I Hate About You

A lot of people have varying opinions about this movie, but there’s one thing we can all agree on: the scene where Heath Ledger performs “Can’t Take My Eyes off You” had us all swooning in our seats when we saw it.

4. You’ve Got Mail

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were the original love team of the 20th century. They’ve done three movies together, but what really solidified them in the memory of movie audiences around the globe was their joint performance in “You’ve Got Mail”. The scene where Tom Hanks wipes Meg Ryan’s tears away and says “Don’t cry, Shopgirl. Don’t cry.” never fails to make audiences tear up.

5. The Parent Trap

What’s a girl to do when she finds out her father is about to marry the modern equivalent of an evil stepmother? Conspire with her twin to get her parents back together of course! The Parent Trap is a feel-good movie filled with romance, secret handshakes, and Dennis Quaid falling for Natasha Richardson (both literally and metaphorically) again and again.

6. Notting Hill

Notting Hill tells the story a of dorky, nerdy bookshop owner, played by Hugh Grant, whose life gets turned upside down when he meets a famous Hollywood actress, played by Julia Roberts, in his quaint Notting Hill shop. Their lives are forever changed after a spilled drink and a kiss. Julia Roberts saying “Don’t forget I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” goes down as one of the most iconic lines in cinematic history thanks to this movie.

7. Wedding Singer

If you’re into cheesy, kitschy, 80’s themed rom-coms, The Wedding Singer is definitely for you. I think we all fell a little bit in love with Adam Sandler when he sang “Grow Old With You” to Drew Barrymore on that airplane.

Watch out for part 2 coming soon!
